Energy-efficient windows

Energy-efficient windows for Cape Coral heat

In Southwest Florida the job of an efficient window is to keep the sun’s heat out. We pick glass and frame to suit the direction each window faces.

An energy-efficient window in Cape Coral is one with a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which comes mainly from a Low-E coating. Adding Low-E typically costs $40 to $150 per window over clear glass, and for our climate the ENERGY STAR southern-zone target is an SHGC of 0.23 or lower.

Up north, efficient windows are about holding heat in. Here it’s the opposite. Cooling season here barely ends, and a big share of the load your AC carries arrives through window glass, especially on walls that face west and catch the late afternoon sun.

Reading the label

Every window carries an NFRC label with a few numbers. Two matter most in Cape Coral:

  • SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient). How much incoming solar heat makes it into the room, shown as a fraction. Lower wins. Clear single-pane glass is around 0.7 or higher; good Low-E glass is in the 0.2s.
  • U-factor. How well the window insulates. Lower is better. It counts, but less than SHGC in a cooling climate.
  • Visible transmittance. The share of daylight that passes. Higher keeps rooms bright. Good Low-E keeps this reasonable, so the room doesn’t feel tinted.

What makes the difference

Low-E coating. A microscopically thin metal layer that reflects infrared heat while letting light through. It is the single biggest upgrade for a Florida window.

Insulated or laminated glass. Two panes with a sealed space between them insulate far better than one. Impact glass with a Low-E layer gets you storm protection and heat control in one unit.

The frame. Bare aluminum conducts heat freely. Vinyl and thermally broken aluminum frames don’t.

The install. A good window leaks air if the gap around it isn’t sealed. We seal the full perimeter inside and out, which also stops the hot spots you can feel around old frames.

Where to spend first

If the budget won’t stretch to every window, start with the west elevation, then the south, then any room you spend afternoons in. North windows get little direct sun, so they can come last.

The Low-E upcharge is an estimate across common brands, not a quote. We don’t promise a set percentage off your power bill; savings depend on the house, the glass you replace and how you run your AC.

Energy-efficiency questions

Does Low-E glass darken a room?

Today’s Low-E is nearly clear. It stops heat far more than light, and we carry samples to hold up against your own view.

How much will I save on electricity?

It varies too much to promise a figure. Homes replacing clear single-pane glass on sunny walls see the biggest difference.

Can you add Low-E film to my existing windows?

Window film is a different trade, and we don’t apply it. We replace glass or whole windows.

Can impact windows save energy too?

Yes, if the impact glass is ordered with a Low-E coating. Then one unit does both jobs.
